ANCESTOR SPOTLIGHT
Getting Acquainted with our Relatives:
Donna Everhart presented an introduction to her dad, Clair Mock, who was present. Clair celebrated his 100th birthday on July 24, 2005. He did something he always wanted to do, ride a Harley Davidson Motorcycle.
Clair was born July 24, 1905, the son of Wilson Decker and Idella Catherine Barefoot Mock. Idella is the daughter of Espy and Annetta (Emerick) Barefoot, and Espy is the son of William S. and Dianne (Heck) Barefoot.
Clair lived in Spruce Hollow. He was a self-taught mechanic; and he worked on the farm and loved gardening. He worked for Sealtest Dairy, retiring in 1972.
Clair now lives at Colonial Courtyard; he walks 3 miles a day, takes no medicine.
He does take 2 T each day of the following mixture: 2C vinegar and 1C honey.
Clair has been receiving the prize as the oldest man, and we hope he continues to do so for many more years.
Here is an article on Clair when he celebrated his 99th birthday.

"Bedford Resident Has Strong Ties to Church"

Clair Mock holds replica he made of the original Mock Church built in 1843.

You can't keep a good man down, they say, and Clair Mock of Bedford is proof. He celebrated his 99th birthday July 26, and he still walks from 2 to 4 miles a day.
It was fitting that he marked the milestone with a cake at the Bedford Church of
the Brethren, Just up the road from Colonial Manor, where he lives, Mock has been a member of the Dunnings Creek Church of the Brethren all his life, and the original church building was erected on land donated by his great-great-grandfather in 1843. Known as the old Mock Church, it still stands but is used only occasionally.
Clair made three exact replicas of the Mock Church, complete with logs and separate doors on opposite sides - one for men to enter and the other for women and children. They are complete with a table and plank benches inside.
One replica was sent to the denomination's headquarters in Elgin, IL, and another to Church of the Brethren Pennsylvania Middle District office in Huntingdon. The third will go to Dunnings Creek Church. The original church, located between Pleasantville and Ryot, would not be standing if Clair had not inspired several other men to help him restore it, a job that took about 10 years.
But that's getting ahead of the story.
Six families of Brethren started the congregation, meeting in homes until 1842,
when the George Holsinger family arrived from Woodbury. They decided to build a
church and Christian Mock donated the land, although there are stories that he may
have received $5 for it.
The one-room log structure measured 35 by 26 feet and had segregated seating for men and women on plank benches. In those days, some of the preachers were good for an hour and a half or longer. There was no pulpit, just a table. The church was used for 75 years, but was outgrown as the congregation expanded. The Holsinger Meeting House was built, and then the Point Church, and a church at New Paris. One preacher served all three until Point wanted its own pastor.
The Rev. John E. Roland came in 1940 and served all three for $75 a month and a parsonage up the road from the New Paris Church. His salary later was raised to $80. He stayed for seven years.
"Back in the 1940s, gasoline was scarce," Clair said. "He would drive up one of the hollows and get out and walk to visit all those families up there. I'd like to see a preacher today do that."
The present Dunnings Creek Church was dedicated in January 1971. Meanwhile, the original Mock Church was in bad shape, practically falling apart. Logs had rotted and the floor was dangerous. The congregation talked about tearing it down.
"I didn't want to hear that," Clair said. "One Sunday afternoon six of us went up there, and we decided we could put new logs in if they would give us permission."
With him were Karl Kaufman, Harry Barefoot,Fred Barefoot, Jim Everhart and Neal Weaver. Others joined them later, but they put the first logs in. They jacked up the walls, took the bad logs out and put new ones in, then put metal between the
logs and chinked them with mortar. The whole building was restored.
"At Christmastime, they'll go up and have a Christmas service there with candles and oil lamps," Clair said. "That's really a nice service."
Hay rides are scheduled from the old Mock Church. Upon their return, there is a vesper service and hot dogs.
As for himself, Clair said he plans to keep on walking, as he enters his 100th year. He said he takes no medicine of any kind except eye drops now and then. He does take his own mixture of apple vinegar and honey to keep the blood vessels cleared out. "I eat a lot of vegetables, fruit and nuts," he said. "God furnishes all that stuff to help you out."
His religion is very real to Clair. When asked if he had any advice for people today, he held up his Bible and said, "Right here's a lot of good advice. Read that and pray every day. That's a lot of good advice to start with."
Clair was born in Lincoln Township, near Lovely, in 1905, one of 10 children of Wilson and Idella Mock. He attended the five grades in a little school above Lovely, and worked on the family farm.
Over the years, he worked at various jobs. Among them were the Pennsylvania Railroad shops at Altoona, the brick plant at Sproul and New Enterprise Stone & Lime.
He was married April 6, 1930, to Ruth Lillian Bowser. Her death in 2002 broke a union of 72 years. He has four children: Elaine Sollenberger, Donna Everhart, Nancy Mitchell and Arthur Mock. He has 12 grand-children and 18 great-grand-children.
There were also several articles in the paper when he celebrated 100 years.

.

Clair rides a Harley at 100 years.
This year after learning about Clair Mock, we were entertained by the band HTAF. Dave Burns, son of Patty Jones, grandson of G. Robert and Barbara Hott, descended through Elizabeth (Barefoot) Hammer, is a member of the band. They will also entertain us in 2006. For the “Getting Acquainted with Our Relatives” presentation in 2006, Mark Hott has agreed to tell about his grandmother Elizabeth (Krise) Hott, descended through Elizabeth (Barefoot) Hammer. For years Elizabeth Hott attended the reunions and served in various offices and mailed the postcards.

Personal Note: "Not only was Eleanor Hott Kinnan my sister, but she was also my best friend. I called her at least once a week from York to Johnstown, PA. She listened endlessly to my tales of woe and added some of her own. Slowly I watched her become decimated from diabetes and kidney transplant failure. She was on her way home to her Joe who had died many years before, but I hated to lose her. We owe a great debt of gratitude to Eleanor for saving the Barefoot Reunion when attendance had dropped off and the money was so low that we could no longer afford a pavilion. She and I worked together to make the reunion solvent and to increase membership. I miss her, and when I go to Windber for the Barefoot Reunion, I almost expect her to still be there. She became the matriarch of the Hott Clan, and after many years, we still miss her, her genealogical expertise, and her loving care of her family." Sylvia Hott Sonneborn

By ARLENE JOHNS
THE TRIBUNE-DEMOCRAT
ajohns@tribdem.com
Nathan Russell Barefoot, an Alum Bank contractor, died Monday during a family picnic. He was 67. His daughter, Kristal King, also of Alum Bank, said her father had open-heart surgery in 1990 and wasn't expected to live.
But he pulled through and continued to run the family business, Barefoot Construction, until 2000. Additional heart problems eventually led doctors to tell him they couldn't do anything more for him.
"It was like a miracle that we got to keep him as long as we did," his daughter said.
Mr. Barefoot always barbecued the chicken at the annual picnic and was at his post Monday. Although his wife knew he was tired, he played a game of vol-
leyball after his cooking duties ended.
He believed it was a sin to complain," his daughter said.
He eventually left the game and sat down in the garage.
"He said he probably shouldn't have played," Mrs. King said. "Then he just slumped over."

But Mr. Barefoot wouldn't have wanted it any other way. He had made the comment that he wanted to go fast and he wanted to either be at church or at home.
A spiritual man, Mr. Barefoot frequently gave his personal testimony during services at his church, Peoples Bible Holiness Church in Alum Bank.
"In the last six months, he'd stand and say he was homesick for heaven and that he longed
to go," his daughter said. "His faith was his life."
Mr. Barefoot didn't just talk about his religion. He lived it. He taught Sunday school classes for years, and he and his wife were frequent visitors at local
nursing homes. His daughter said his home always was open to ministers and missionaries who needed a place to stay.
Mr. Barefoot married the former Bertha Louise Mihaiko in 1959. He met his future wife when he played baseball with her brother.
The two were in their teens when they met and continued their courtship through his service with the Army.
Family was important to Mr. Barefoot. His daughter said he not only was close to his own family, but also very close to his wife's family. "The church family were like his family as well," Mrs. King said.
He and his men did carpentry and masonry work in the region. His son continues the business.
There would be days when Mom would ask him to stay home," his daughter said. "But he would say, 'The boys need me.' "My father loved work, family and mostly God," she said. "He left us a beautiful heritage and a legacy."
In addition to his wife and daughter, Mr. Barefoot is survived by two other daughters, Kimberly Dicken of Fishertown and Linette Dicken of New Paris; a son. Eric of Alum Bank; 10 grandchildren; a brother, Nevin of Alum Bank; and two sisters, Mildred Heming of Alum Bank and Florence Davis of Millmont. He was preceded in death by an infant son.

Special Report on Eleanor Kinnan, Our Past President

Eleanor Kinnan's High School Graduation

Eleanor Hott Kinnan Special

Revloc Woman Was Fascinated with Ancestry

By TED POTTS
THE TRIBUNE-DEMOCRAT, Johnstown, Pennsylvania

Eleanor Lee Kinnan of Revloc, who was avidly interested in genealogy, died Saturday at Laurel Crest Manor, Ebensburg. She was 70. "She could quote genealogy from way back," said her sister, Gail Prave of East Taylor Township. Ms. Prave said genealogy fascinated her sister, likening Mrs. Kinnan's recollection of family history to a records center. She said her sister's interest in genealogy began in earnest when her mother, the late Elizabeth Krise Hott, left some of her genealogical information to Mrs. Kinnan.

Mrs. Kinnan was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 609 Walters Ave. The church, headquartered in Salt Lake City and whose members are known as Mormons, encourages its members to become involved in their families' histories, Ms.Prave said.

At the local church, Mrs. Kinnan was a former Relief Society president, Sunday school teacher and director of the family history center. Family history centers at Latter-day Saints churches have access to the church's massive genealogy archives in Salt Lake City, Ms. Prave said.

Mrs. Kinnan was a former member of the election board in Revloc. Election board members work at polls on election days, handing out ballots to voters and counting and delivering ballots to the Cambria County Courthouse after elections. She was a longtime member of the board in Revloc, her sister said. Mrs. Kinnan also took ballots to voters who were patients at Laurel Crest and who could not get to the polls, Ms. Prave said. Mrs. Kinnan was left to raise her five children on her own when her husband, Joseph, died when the children all were at young ages, Ms. Prave said. Mrs. Kinnan served as president of her family's Barefoot Reunion from 1992 until earlier this year, when ill health made it necessary for her to step down, her sister said.

She enjoyed cooking, particularly baking. "She was a wonderful baker," Ms. Prave said. She said she baked frequently, particularly pies, cakes and the like. She enjoyed reading, particularly books about history, her sister said. Asked to describe Mrs. Kinnan's personality, Ms. Prave said: "She was a very social person. She loved to talk to people, and she absolutely loved children. She had a beautiful spirit."

Eleanor Hott Kinnan with her son Jeffrey Scott Kinnan and Karen Kinnan

Mrs. Kinnan was a former Avon representative. Although she had been out of Avon sales for 15 years, many of her customers kept in touch with her, Ms. Prave said. "Her customers thought the world of her," her sister said. Mrs. Kinnan is survived by four sons: Jeffrey of Armagh; William and Greg, both of Casper, Wyo.; and Richard of Colver; and one daughter, Karen Peterson of Camp Verde, Ariz. There are six grandchildren. In addition to Ms. Prave, Mrs. Kinnan is survived by two brothers, Fred Hott and G.Robert Hott, both of Ebensburg; and four other sisters, Betsy Hawthorne of Johnstown, Sylvia Sonneborn of York, Mary Hutchison of Huntsville, Mo. and Nancy O'Hara of Wright, WY.
